I’ve heard you can use applesauce in place of butter in cookie recipes?

I don’t have butter at my house, and I have no way to get it. I do have oil, but I’d heard that it’s possible to use applesauce in the place of butter in cookie recipes. Has anyone done this? Does it work?
Also, does it affect the taste?
